The Nature Observer’s Gallery

On April 13, 2012 I spotted a silken shelter on the flowerhead of a Purple Everlasting plant in Tiger Bay State Forest, Volusia County, FL  In the tent was an American Lady caterpillar, a Brush-foot butterfly that I often see in Florida’s Pine Flatwoods.  I collected the caterpillar. At home I potted some everlasting plants from my yard and set up a habitat in my screen porch.  The caterpillar formed a chrysalis on April 17.  The butterfly eclosed on April  27.  When its wings had hardened I released it.  Enjoy the slideshow.
