The Luna Moth, Actias luna, is one of North America’s largest moths with a five inch wingspan.  Its larva feeds on the leaves of many hardwoods.  I often see the adults fly in central Florida in January; in Pennsylvania, May/June and July/August.

Luna Moths are named for a translucent crescent on the adult’s forewing.  There are two eyespots on the hindwing although these are concealed when the moth is at rest. If the Luna is disturbed it raises the forewings to flash the “eyes” as a threat.

I included some photos of the related Polyphemus moth and caterpillar for comparison.
