Killdeer, grassland plovers of temperate North America, are named for their loud call, “Kill-deer, kill-deer.”  They nest in gravel patches and bare earth, often in parking lots, or golf courses.  Although shorebirds, they are more often found in open fields.  Wingspan, 24 inches, length 10.5 inches, weight 3.3 ounces.
