Birds’ eyes are complex and fascinating adaptations.

Especially interesting are birds’ eye lids.  Like humans they have two outer lids.  Unlike ours, the bottom lid moves up to met the top.  These eyelids are shut primarily for sleep.  A third eyelid, the nictitating membrane is responsible for the functions of blinking -- moistening and and cleansing the lens.
