Biographical information, Chuck Tague


    Chuck Tague writes the Nature Observer’s Journal, an online natural history site that features his weekly blog.  He founded and published the Nature Observer News, (1992 – 2005) a monthly journal for educators and naturalists in western Pennsylvania.

    He volunteers at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge where he developed a series of butterfly identification programs for the monthly butterfly diversity surveys.  He is also the Field Trip Co-chair for Halifax River Audubon.


    Mr. Tague is an accomplished nature photographer.  His photos appear on many websites and publications, including the American Bird Conservancy’s guide to the Breeding Birds of the Texas Coast.  He writes the Bird Watch column for the Peregrine, the journal of the Three Rivers Birding Club.


    A long-time nature enthusiast, he presented classroom and assembly programs on birds and ecology in schools and nature centers throughout western Pennsylvania.  He also developed and led Nature Journaling Workshops for Home School Associations.

 

    Mr. Tague was President of the Wissahickon Nature Club from 1997 through 2010.  Previously, he was the Education Curator at the Pittsburgh Aviary and was an adjunct professor at the Rachel Carson Institute at Chatham University.  He wrote commentary for the Allegheny Front, Pittsburgh’s only locally produced radio environmental program.

 

    He volunteered as a naturalist at the Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh and led outings for the Halifax River Audubon, Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, Three Rivers Birding Club, River Quest and Nine Mile Run Watershed Association.  He was the Important Bird Area coordinator for the Raccoon Creek Valley and was a site coordinator for the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch.


    In 2009 The Group Against Smog and Pollution honored Mr. Tague as one of southwestern Pennsylvania’s forty environmental heroes.


    He received the 2002 W. E. Clyde Todd Award from the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania for his “significant contributions furthering the cause of environmental conservation in Pennsylvania”.


    He also received a 1997 National Conservation Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a finalist for the Three Rivers Environmental Award in 1998 and was named Outdoor Person of the Year by the Butler Outdoor Club for 1998.



Chuck Tague graduated from Point Park College in 1970 with a B.A. in English.  He studied Secondary Education at Duquesne University. 


In 1968 he was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps with a Meritorious Mast for service in a combat zone.
